Desert X is the Desert Biennial, conceived to produce recurring international contemporary art exhibitions that activate desert locations through site-specific installations by acclaimed international artists. Providing an accessible platform for artists from around the world to address ecological, cultural, spiritual, and other existential themes

Curated by Artistic Director Neville Wakefield and Co-curator César García-Alvarez, the exhibition will explore the desert as both a place and idea, acknowledging the realities of people who reside here and the political, social, and cultural contexts that shape their stories.

Desert X will include newly commissioned works that collectively pose urgent questions about our pasts while imagining the possibilities of a shared future.

Accompanying the outdoor works is a dynamic program of educational initiatives and artist projects that will help expand the organization’s reach to international audiences. Not to mention, an upcoming film by Desert X will launch globally across multiple platforms, so viewers can follow along at home.

The 2020 exhibit embraced AlUla’s extraordinary environment and rich cultural heritage. As visitors streamed into the desert, surrounded by vast stretches of sand, towering sandstone cliffs and huge rocks, they were amazed to find 14 unique works of contemporary art set organically in the enchanting landscape.
