Underwater archaeological sites are out of sight and more often than not out of mind. The reason for this situation is simple – the physical barrier created by the sea itself. To date, only divers or people in submarines are able to visit such sites. Through this virtual museum, you now have the opportunity to explore these historic time capsules

Advances in technology provide this astounding opportunity to explore the underwater world without getting wet! The use of powerful cameras and special underwater lights enable us to capture Malta’s underwater cultural heritage in such a way as to make it accessible to everyone, whilst also allowing the public to dive into history

With over 7000 years of history reflected in its towns and landscapes, Malta has one of the highest concentrations of heritage per square kilometer anywhere in the world. Recent studies and discoveries have shown that millennia of maritime activity have also left their mark on the seabed surrounding the Maltese Islands. This underwater cultural heritage is of international importance that goes beyond local history.

The 3D models of the wrecks are created using a process called photogrammetry, whereby trained divers capture hundreds, often thousands, of images of the visible parts of each wreck. These overlapping images are then loaded into specialist software and converted into a detailed 3D model. The 3D diving team, affectionately dubbed the “3D fairies”, must descend to the depths, often multiple times, to photograph the wrecks from every angle.

Launched by the Malta Tourism Authority, University of Malta and Heritage Malta, the virtual Underwater Malta museum offers viewers access to 10 archaeological sites, ranging from seven to 361 feet below the surface. Shipwrecks, sunken planes, submarines and various other treasures are on display, and each entry is viewable in 3D with additional details embedded within clickable tabs.

The depths of the sites range from 2 meters (approx. 7 feet) to 110m. (approx. 361 feet) The 10 current sites explore shipwrecks, plane crashes, submarines, and more sites that are right off Malta’s coast. Sites featured include B24 Liberator, JU88, Phoenician Shipwreck, HMS Stubborn, Victorian Guns, Xlighter 127, Beaufighter, Schnellboot S-31, Fairey Swordfish, and HMS Maori.
