草間彌生 Yayoi Kusama: A Retrospective

Yayoi Kusama is one of the world’s most important contemporary artists. In April 2021, the Gropius Bau will devote the first comprehensive retrospective in Germany to Kusama’s work. Presented across almost 3000 m², the exhibition will offer an overview of the key periods in her oeuvre, which spans more than 70 years, and feature a number of current works as well as a newly realised Infinity Mirror Room

The retrospective will focus primarily on tracing the development of Kusama’s creative output from her early paintings and accumulative sculptures to her immersive environments, as well exploring her lesser-known artistic activity in Germany and Europe. Infinity Mirror Room – The Eternally Infinite Light of the Universe Illuminating the Quest for Truth

For more than 50 years, Yayoi Kusama has conceived of Infinity Mirror Rooms that completely immerse the viewer in a Kusama world. This new work includes light sources of flashing LEDs and mirrored spheres, illuminating both the space and viewer. As Kusama once described, she creates “a tsunami of art capable of swallowing the entire world.”

A major new retrospective at Gropius Bau in Berlin looks beyond that span of famous work. “A Bouquet of Love I Saw in the Universe,” which opened today, has recreated eight exhibitions that mark less-recognized turning points in the Japanese artist’s career. The indexical approach sheds light on the enduring complexities that hide in plain sight in Kusama’s obsessively painted and warping world.

A close collaboration with the artist, this ambitious survey at the Gropius Bau in Berlin (23 Apr.–15 Aug.) allows visitors to lose themselves in full reconstructions of eight of Kusama’s exhibitions. Included are two of Kusama’s earliest exhibitions, held in her hometown of Matsumoto, followed by the installation ‘Aggregation: One Thousand Boats Show’, which was staged in New York in 1963. The survey also includes a new Infinity Room and an installation specially commissioned for the atrium of the museum.

The installation A Bouquet of Love I Saw in the Universe (2021) was realised by Kusama uniquely for the vast historic atrium of the Gropius Bau, which will erupt in a sea of large-scale inflatable tentacles for the exhibition’s duration.
